William D. Harris, 85, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, October 28, 2019. He died at his home in Millersville, MD after a six-year battle with kidney cancer. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dolores Harris, two sons, William (Karen) and Robert (Sandy), eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and his sister Annie Lou McCann of Charlotte, NC.
He was born in North Wilkesboro, NC in 1933 to the late Ephriam and Viola Harris. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Robert and Sevaughn. In 1952, he joined the United States Army with his brother Robert and served during the Korean War.
In 1956, after being honorably discharged from the army, he moved to Baltimore and began work as a tower maintenance operator. It was in Baltimore where he met the love of his life Dolores and married her in 1959.
When their sons were toddlers, he moved his family to Millersville; an area where he would spend the rest of his life. He worked in construction work as a painter for most of his working years. He loved to hunt, fish, watch NASCAR and be with his family. He was known by his friends, neighbors and family as a man who would go out of his way to lend help to anyone in need.
A private funeral will be held on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at Fink Funeral Home followed by internment at Glen Haven Memorial Park (both in Glen Burnie, MD). In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Checkered Flag Foundation to support veterans and first responders during their road to recovery.
