Sadly, on January 21, 2022, Samuel Benitez Reyna passed in the fullness of his 87th year.
Born in the Philippines the son of Felipe Ventura and Dulcesima Cansino Benitez-Reyna, he joined the United States Navy in 1951 at the tender age of 17. Sam would spend a full 21 years in service, travelling the world participating in the Korean and Vietnam War and retiring in 1979 as an E6. During his time in the Navy he was assigned to various ratings including the Seabees, where he worked with UDT/Seal teams, to his final rating as an MS1. He earned the Good Conduct Medal (5) and the National Defense Service Medal for his dedicated service.
Following his service Sam worked in various jobs including being a manager at the Baltimore Sun and in the Entertainment repair trade as a working partner for 15 years at Annapolis Television. In his leisure he enjoyed being outdoors, home improvement and talking to anyone and everyone he came across. He loved travel and cooking and keeping a garden. Sam was a dedicated Catholic man, a member of the Knights of Columbus and Post 40 American Legion.
Surviving him is his devoted wife of 57 years, Ofelia (nee Reyna), his beloved sons Samuel R. Reyna and wife Josephine (nee Maccarrone) and Stewart P. Reyna. His memory will be cherished by his loving grandchildren, Samuel Raphael, Julia Nicole, Daniella Marie, Gabriella Michelle and Sophia Elizabeth Reyna. Sam will be deeply missed by his beloved siblings Violeta Benitez Reyna, Felipa Benitez Reyna, Jose Benitez Reyna, Jesusa Reyna-Arcilla and Dulce Reyna-Ayala. He is reunited in passing with his late sibling, Reloisa Reyna-Rili, Raymundo Benitez Reyna, Raquel Benitez Reyna, Juana Benitez Reyna and Brenda Benitez Reyna.
