Obituary

Lisa Ann Mason-Chaney, 53, died peacefully in her home on Sunday, May 10, 2015. She is survived by her mother and father, Bill and Doris Mason; husband Kevin D. Chaney; daughter Courtney Ann Housley; son-in-law Jeremy Housley; grandson and granddaughter Sylis and Mea Housley; son Robert W. Jones; step-son Kevin Chaney, Jr.; step-daughter Christina Chaney, brother Terry Mason, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by grandparents Ethel and Elbert Himes, and Gladys and Jesse Mason. Lisa was born April 18, 1962 in Paducah, Kentucky. She married Royal Jones in 1982, and had two children by him: Courtney and Robert. Lisa and her family moved to Maryland in 1989. She divorced Royal in 1992 and married Kevin Chaney on November 20, 1994. They remained married until her final days. She dedicated her life to her love for music, the arts, and history. Lisa painted, and loved fine art (but hated commercial art!) For school projects as a young woman she would design menus for local restaurants in Bowling Green, Kentucky. She loved photography as well, and took several photography classes in college. She attended Western Kentucky University, where she obtained a B.F.A. in Fine Art and Art History and an M.A. in Folk Studies with an emphasis in Idiosyncratic Folk Art. Lisa's truest passion was the study of antiquity, and her entire career path reflected this. She got her start as a Curatorial Assistant at the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution, and then as a Curator for the Anderson House Museum in Washington, D.C. Lisa's meteoric rise through historical academia placed her as Director for the B&O Railroad Station Museum in Ellicott City, Assistant Director and Curator at the Hammond-Harwood House in Annapolis, and finally, as Executive Director for the Howard County Historical Society. Even her spare time was dedicated to history. Lisa served as the past President and Board Member of the Small Museum Association. She volunteered as a judge for the Maryland History Project every year, and hosted both a Civil War Reenactment program and an Irish Railroad Laborer Reenactment program at the B&O Railroad Station Museum. She served as the Mid-Atlantic Representative for the American Association of Museums, a member of the Painted Screen Society of Baltimore, and as a Peer Reviewer for the American Association of Museums. Services will be held on Saturday, May the 30th, at 6:00 p.m. at the Hammond-Harwood House, 19 Maryland Avenue, Annapolis, Maryland 21401.
