Obituary

On February 15, 2017 Joseph Anthony Mayer, Sr. passed into eternity after a life spent in service to many.  May he find rest in the arms of his savior. Born in Manhattan, New York to a zealously patriotic  father Francis Xavier and his wife Mary nee Dunn, Joseph joined a family who new service to their country across several generations and campaigns. Following in the family tradition, he enlisted in the U.S . Marine Reserve as a basically trained Private and later became a Navy Hospitalman.  During his time in service, he participated in the Korean war with the 1st Medical Battalion, 1stMArDiv, Fleet Marine Forces engaged in heavy fighting at the Chosin Resevoir, also know to many as the "Frozen Chosin," where the United States Marine Corps once again proved their mettle, protecting freedom, paid for in blood. It was at this time, when so many Marines were killed and wounded that Hospital Corpsman Joseph A. Mayer cemented his place in history.  Under heavy fire, HM Mayer saved no less than 20 Marines with no regard for his own safety and surely treated many more wounded, ultimately falling to enemy fire himself. For his uncommon valor in the face of certain death,  Joseph Mayer won the Purple Heart, Bronze Star with combat "V" and a Presidential Unit Citation with star.  He also earned the Good Conduct Medal, Korean Theatre Ribbon with 2 stars and the United Nations Ribbon. Following his foreign service, he returned to serve at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. In the convening years he would settle down in Glen Burnie, Md. with his dear wife Theresa Olivia nee Skipper, where they lived until moving to Severna Park.   His vocation in life was that of  Chief Engineer Draftsman with the Anne Arundel County government where he worked for 25 years. In Theresa's declining years Joseph stood by her side, nursing her in  illness when he himself suffered a broken  hip.  Unfailing love and devotion marked their time together even to her passing several years before him. Joseph was a "sports enthusiast to the end," enjoying Orioles baseball and the Baltimore Colts as well coaching Little League Baseball for both his son and grandson. He will be sorely missed by his son and Daughter-in-law Joseph A. , Jr and Kimberly ,by his dear brother and sister Robert and Theresa and his loving grandchildren Joseph A., III, Christopher, Lauren, Madison, Ian, Max and David. Joseph Anthony Mayer, Sr.  A true American hero in many ways.
