Beloved husband of Nancy E. Scanlon; loving father of Mary Murphy (Kevin), Jim Scanlon (Becky), Teresa Scanlon, Mike Scanlon (Shannon), and Robert Scanlon (Quennie); cherished grandfather of Donovan Murphy (Breana), Lexi Murphy (Isaac), Kelsey Scanlon, and Sydney Scanlon; dear great-grandfather of James Murphy. He is also survived by his brother Bill Scanlon (Celeste), sister-in-law Joyce Scanlon, sister Joan Wolf (Joe), sister Michele Marchica (Nick), and 43 nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Louise Scanlon, sister Louise Scanlon, brothers Paul Scanlon and Bruce Scanlon, and niece Lisa Wiley.

A graduate of the United States Naval Academy (Class of 1963), Jim Scanlon worked over 30 years for the Veterans' Administration in Washington DC. He was a kind, devout, patriotic man, always willing to help those in need, both in his family and unrelated.

A Catholic funeral Mass was offered on Friday, January 16, 2026 at Our Lady of the Fields Roman Catholic Church in Millersville, MD. Interment at Our Lady of the Fields Cemetery.
