Donald Ray
Kunkel, Sr
Aug 8, 1949 — Sep 8, 2026
Donald R. Kunkel, Sr., of Halethorpe, Maryland, was born on August 8, 1949, and peacefully left this world on September 8, 2026.
A devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, great‑grandfather, and friend, Donald lived a life defined by loyalty, service, and heart. He was the beloved son of William Frederick Kunkel Jr. and Edith Wolf, and the cherished brother of Julia L. Colburn and Janice L. Hawk, who preceded him in death.
In 1969, Donald proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, serving his country during the Vietnam War as a gunmate aboard the USS John Willis. His years in the Navy remained a source of pride throughout his life.
Outside of his service, Donald was a man who found joy in simple pleasures—fishing, camping, and cheering on NASCAR. He especially loved family vacations in Ocean City, Maryland, where countless memories were made along the shore. He was a diehard Baltimore sports fan, faithfully supporting the Ravens and Orioles through every season.
A devoted father, Donald poured his time and energy into his children’s lives. He proudly coached little league, as well as Donald Jr.’s teams at North Glenn and Beachfield, becoming a mentor, cheerleader, and steady presence for countless young players.
Donald spent most of his life in the Baltimore area, though he treasured the years he lived in Tennessee with his sister. After nearly eight years there, he returned to Halethorpe, where he made his home for the remainder of his life.
He is survived by his children, Kimberly Ann Kunkel (Travis Koballa) and Donald Kunkel Jr.; his stepsons Steven Knight (Heather Knight), Michael Knight (Sarah Knight), and Scott Knight (Michelle Knight, preceded in death). He is also preceded in death by Barbara Kunkel, his wife and the mother of his children.
Donald also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Dustin Knight, Brittany Michaud, Scott Knight Jr., Alicia Knight (preceded in death), Kodie Knight, Kourtnie Knight, Karli Butler, Justina Knight, Kassidy Knight, Jordan Knight, Kaiulani Koballa, and Micenzie Knight. His cherished great‑grandchildren include Ronnie Vest Jr., Layla Knight, Kenzi Knight, and Skye Knight.
He will also be deeply missed by many extended family members and dear friends who loved him and will carry his memory forward.
A viewing will be held Wednesday, September 16, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. (Eastern Time). A military burial service will be scheduled at a later date.
Donald’s life was one of service, devotion, and unwavering love for his family. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched and the memories he leaves behind
