Obituary

Roland L Martin, 82, of Severn, Maryland passed away March 12, 2012 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie, MD.  He was born on December 9, 1929 in Lewiston, Maine to Paul and Alice (Ouellette) Martin - he was the younger of two sons.  Roland was married to his best friend and partner in life, Janet S. (Zier) for 53 years.  He was the devoted father of Michael Martin and Michelle (Martin) Challgren and the proud Opa (Grandfather) of Christina and Martin Challgren. Roland proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1947 – 1967.  From Private to Chief Warrant Officer 3, Roland served in Japan in the aftermath of the Second World War, aboard the USS Missouri, USS Rochester and ashore during the Korean War, the Philippines, France, Germany and throughout the United States before retiring in 1967.  He was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal of Japan, National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Korea Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and Republic of Korea War Service Medal. Roland and Janet moved to Maryland in 1967 and made the area their home.  Following Roland's retirement from the Army, he began a second career in service to his nation with the Social Security Administration from 1967 – 1986.   While raising their children and living in the Old Mill community of Millersville, Roland and Janet developed a network of friends and family that established them as Marylanders and rooted them to this area since.  In 1986 Roland retired a second time from federal service and in 1988 began a third career working in the import/export business for the Samuel Shapiro & Company before finally retiring for the third and final time in the late 1990s. Roland enjoyed golf, football and spending time with his family.  Golf was one of Roland's favorite pastimes – playing golf with his Fort Meade golf buddies, playing in the annual Gabatz Golf Tournament and never missing a PGA tournament on television.  He was a loyal Baltimore Colts fan, until they left, and became a born-again Raven's fan through and through.  Spending time with his family, however, was the most important time in his life.  Whether it was with his bride, Janet, his son, daughter or grandchildren – Roland was a loving and devoted Husband, Father and Opa until the day he died. Roland is survived by his wife, Janet (Zier) Martin; son, Michael Martin; daughter, Michelle (Martin) Challgren; son-in-law,Michael Challgren; and two beautiful grandchildren, Christina and Martin Challgren.  He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Armand Martin.
