Florence (Galloway) Hayes

Florence Galloway Hayes, daughter of the late Samuel and Bertha (Simms) Galloway, was born on December 1, 1915 at Waugh Chapel Road in Odenton, Maryland. She departed this life on Monday, August 6, 2018 at the age of 102.

Florence attended the public schools in Anne Arundel County and received her Christian training at Macedonia United Methodist Church in Odenton. She later joined Metropolitan United Methodist Church in Severn where she became Vice President and Treasurer of the Women’s Society of Christian Service. Besides participating as one of the church’s lay leaders, Florence was an active member of the Senior Choir, Adams chorus, sick committee, steward board and the finance commission. Attending Sunday school and the weekly bible study became her extra source of spiritual strength apart from enjoying the powerful Sunday morning sermons and singing at Metropolitan. One of the other joys in her life was to make sure you left her home with a baked goodie or something in your hand. She was everybody’s “Aunt Florence”.

Florence was the youngest of 15 children all of whom have preceded her in death. She was married to the late William Lester Hayes with whom she had two children, the late Gayle N. Jenkins and the late William L. Hayes. She leaves to mourn her Daughter-in law Carolyn Bolling-Hayes of Glen Burnie, MD, her Grandchildren Ebony Vines of New York, NY, Alyse Vines of Augusta, GA and Stephen Jenkins with his wife Tiffani of Severn, MD as well as four Great-Grandchildren, Joius, William, Rion and Benjamin Jenkins. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and a wonderful and loving church family who called her “Mother Hayes”.
